The Winding Wheel 09/04/05

Looking as if in a supernatural trance, the twin statues of the female bass players and guitarist, together with dark, brooding vocals In Theory get off to a slow start at Chesterfield's Winding Wheel. But they come into their own with imposing chugging guitars of Wise Girl, sounding reminiscent of The Kills and come up trumps with the excitable, catchy I Loved You and the angular guitars and gutsy vocals of Take Me Away.

It seems the more In Theory throw themselves into performing, the better they get.

Boardwalk 23/08/04

The members of the young Sheffield band In Theory seem to have everything. They have a strong image and together as a band produce some great rock songs. On August 23rd at the Boardwalk, Sheffield they all retained a cool, relaxed air while still thoroughly enjoying themselves. The unity between the band members is clear and they communicate well on stage and write and perform many fun and heartfelt songs together.

Luckily, the fact the band were on stage first was not a problem; in fact it seemed to make people sit up and notice them. The opening song ‘Poison Dart’ was tight, bright and quirky. As every band performing on the 23rd, seemingly with the exception of Peter Morris, In Theory had their own cluster of appreciative fans, but as the audience on Monday night could clearly see, they are one of those bands who have something for everyone.

It is impossible not to be impressed by In Theory’s blistering performance, energy and their mature style, especially when considering their average age is teenage. How many bands try to slip in a cute, lyrically genuine song to show they can be sensitive as well as screamy, and actually pull it off? Richie and Teresa once again created a fantastic, intimate atmosphere during the beautiful ‘Drawing Pictures’. The swirling, rhythmical ‘After Eight’ was the highlight of the set, only overshadowed by the dark, climatic energy of ‘Take Me Away’, with which they concluded the set. It has to be said, this song is led by Marie’s outstanding drumming and Helen’s bass contributed a great deal of feeling and rhythm. The sound was excellent throughout the performance, a tribute to their professionalism and the great work of the sound engineer. With this gig In Theory have really showed themselves to be a kickass band.

Third on the bill were Cruel Device who performed a very impressive and tight set, and whose chatty style with the audience soon had everyone loving their style. The ability and passion of the four guys of Cruel Device produced real rock which proved them to be deserving of a headline slot.
